Park on Bailard Avenue. Walk the flat 1.5-mile Bluffs trail west toward the seal rookery overlook. Free, 90 minutes, best light of the day.
Walk or drive to downtown Linden Avenue. Brewlab for coffee. Nutbelly for a sandwich to go. You're now in the heart of town.
If you haven't seen them from the Bluffs, drive to the end of Linden Avenue for the seal rookery overlook. Then stop at the tar pits at the end of Ash Avenue — a strange, free, 10-minute stop.
Delgado's for Mexican (a Carpinteria institution since 1965), or Padaro Beach Grill near Santa Claus Lane for casual beachside food.
The main event. Walk from downtown to the beach — 5 minutes. Calm water, wide sand, lifeguards in summer. Stay as long as you want. This is what you came for.
Drive west to Santa Claus Lane for a quiet walk. Then head to Island Brewing Company on 6th Street for a post-beach beer on the patio.
End your day watching the sun drop into the Pacific from the Bluffs overlook. The Channel Islands on the horizon in fall and winter make this one of the best sunset spots in California.
