Carpinteria has mixed semi-diurnal tides (two highs, two lows daily). Tidal range is approximately 4–5 feet. Low tide is best for tide pools and the tar pits.

August & September — Water reaches 68°F, the warmest of the year. September is the sweet spot: warm water, fewer crowds, and lower hotel rates after Labor Day.
September & October — Warm days, cool nights, clear skies, and the Avocado Festival in early October. The best combination of weather and value.
November–March — Consistent northwest swells make Rincon Point world-class. Carpinteria State Beach stays calm year-round.

If you visit Carpinteria in May or June, you may wake up to overcast skies and cool fog. This is the marine layer — a phenomenon locals call "May Gray" and "June Gloom." A blanket of low clouds rolls in overnight from the Pacific and sits along the coast until midday.
The good news: it almost always burns off. By 11am–1pm, the sun breaks through and the afternoons are typically clear and warm. The marine layer is actually what keeps Carpinteria's summers from getting too hot — coastal fog moderates the temperature in a way inland California towns don't experience.
If you're planning a summer trip, don't let June Gloom deter you. Plan beach activities for the afternoon, enjoy a slow coffee morning at Brewlab or Lucky Llama, and the sun will be waiting for you by lunchtime.

Carpinteria has a Mediterranean climate, which means nearly all rainfall occurs between November and March. The dry season runs from May through October, when rain is extremely rare. Annual rainfall averages about 20 inches, mostly concentrated in winter storms.
Even in rain season, most days are dry — winter rain typically comes in short bursts followed by clear, crisp days. Winter storms occasionally bring dramatic surf to Rincon Point, making it an excellent time for experienced surfers.
If you're visiting in winter, check the forecast a few days ahead. Rain rarely lasts more than a day or two, and the days between storms are some of the most beautiful of the year — clear skies, green hills, and empty beaches.
Carpinteria State Beach is not a surf spot — the waves are intentionally gentle, which is why it earned the "World's Safest Beach" title. For surfing, head to Rincon Point, 10 minutes west on Highway 101. Rincon is one of the most famous point breaks in California, best from November through March with consistent northwest swell.

September and October offer the best combination of warm air, warm water (65–68°F), clear skies, and manageable crowds. August has the warmest water but is the busiest month.

June Gloom (and May Gray) refers to a marine layer of low clouds and fog that rolls in overnight and often persists until midday. It typically burns off by 11am–1pm, leaving sunny afternoons. It is most pronounced in May and June.
Water temperature ranges from about 57°F in February to 68°F in August and September. Most swimmers are comfortable without a wetsuit from July through October. A light wetsuit or rash guard is recommended October through June.
Layers. Even in summer, mornings can be cool and foggy. Bring a light jacket or sweater for evenings, sunscreen, sunglasses, and beach gear. In winter, add a warmer jacket and rain shell.
Morning fog is common in May and June (May Gray / June Gloom). It almost always burns off by midday. Fall and winter have the clearest skies and best visibility to the Channel Islands.
Rincon Point surf is best from November through March when northwest swells are consistent. Summer is typically small or flat at Rincon. Carpinteria State Beach itself is not a surf spot — it is intentionally calm.
