Visiting Carpinteria in Fall — The Best Season to Come
If you can only visit Carpinteria once, come in fall. September and October deliver the best combination of everything the town offers: warm days, cool nights, crystal-clear Channel Islands views, moderate crowds, and the California Avocado Festival on the first weekend of October.
September
Summer crowds are gone after Labor Day but the weather stays warm. Water temperatures peak in September at around 68°F — the best swimming of the year. Hotel rates drop after Labor Day. This is the sweet spot that locals know about.
October
The Avocado Festival (October 2-4, 2026) makes the first weekend of October the busiest of the fall. Book hotels 4-6 weeks in advance for festival weekend. The rest of October is quieter and arguably even better — warm, dry, clear, and uncrowded.
November
The seals begin arriving at the rookery in November. The Channel Islands are razor-sharp on clear days. Early November still has beach weather. Hotel rates continue to drop. By late November the mornings are cool but afternoons are still mild.
Fall Travel Tips
- What to pack: Swimsuits and shorts for the day, a sweater or light jacket for the evening. The temperature drops quickly when the sun goes down.
- Events: The California Avocado Festival dominates early October. Check the events calendar for smaller local happenings.
- Hotel rates: High during Avocado Festival weekend, but moderate to low for the rest of the season.
