How to Get There

By Car

Take Highway 101 South from Santa Barbara. Exit at Linden Avenue (first Carpinteria exit). Free street parking throughout downtown and near the beach. The drive is 15 minutes with no traffic, 20–25 during rush hour.

By Train

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner departs Santa Barbara station and arrives at Carpinteria's Linden Avenue station in about 20 minutes. You step off the train directly downtown. Check amtrak.com for schedules.

The Perfect Day Trip Itinerary

9:00 AM

Depart Santa Barbara

Take Highway 101 South. Exit at Linden Avenue. The drive is 15 minutes — you'll be parked and on the beach before 10.

10:00 AM

Hike the Carpinteria Bluffs

Park on Bailard Avenue and walk the flat 1.5-mile Bluffs trail. Stop at the seal rookery overlook. Free, takes 90 minutes.

11:30 AM

Coffee on Linden Avenue

Walk to downtown Linden Avenue. Brewlab for coffee, Nutbelly for a sandwich. You're now in the heart of Carpinteria.

12:30 PM

Carpinteria State Beach

Walk 5 minutes from Linden Avenue to the beach. Calm water, wide sand, lifeguards in summer. Stay as long as you want.

3:00 PM

Explore Santa Claus Lane

Drive or bike west to Santa Claus Lane — a quiet strip of coast with shops and beach access. Walk the shoreline.

4:30 PM

Late Lunch or Early Beer

Head back to Linden Avenue. Island Brewing Company for a post-beach beer, or Delgado's for a proper meal.

6:00 PM

Sunset and Head Home

Watch the sunset from the Bluffs or the end of Linden Avenue. Drive back to Santa Barbara in 15 minutes — or stay overnight.
